Beginner’s Guide to Buying a Vape Pen

Vape Pens

The vape pen market offers a huge selection of features, uses, styles and unique devices that can be overwhelming to vape pen newbies. We know how intimidating it can be to navigate, so we’ve put together a short series to help you when buying your new vape pen.
When choosing your vape pen, there’s a list of features to take into account:

Vaping Material

It is essential to decide what you want to use in your vape pen. Will you mainly use dry substances or concentrates or both? Some devices are suitable for both but inform yourself first because most vape pens are only suitable for one or the other.

If oils or e-liquids are more your thing, look for devices with an atomizer and a tank or a system of coils and wicks for heating.
For vape pens mainly used for legal concentrates, look for a chamber rather than a tank, as they burn differently. Pro tip: ensure the chamber is easy to clean, as concentrates tend to leave a more stubborn residue.
If you’re looking for a vape pen for legal herbs or dry materials, look for a chamber and keywords like “convection” or “conduction heating”.

Heating Method

Convection heating transfers heat to the chamber without the evaporating material being in direct contact with the heating element. While this heating method reduces the risk of additional combustion and waste of vapor material, it does take some time to warm up. Vape pens which use convection can also be a bit more expensive than those that use conduction heating.
With conduction heating, your vapor material is in direct contact with the heating element. While this means you can steam pretty much instantly, you may lose a third of the smoke due to the increased combustion of the material.
Induction, another type of heating, uses magnetic fields. This heating method is not yet as common as the other two but with vape pen’s new design and production rate, it probably won’t be long before this is the standard, especially since this type of heating allows the vapor product to burn evenly without the possibility of unwanted combustion.

Battery Life

Built-in lithium-ion batteries power most vape pens. If you want a vape pen that can run for several days (depending on your smoking habits), you’ll need to get one with a slightly larger case. Output is also a factor if you use your vape pen for e-liquids, as lower resistance coils create more flavor and vapor and use more power. It’s mostly a matter of how discreet or slim you want your vape pen to be and what you’re using it for (how long you’ll be away from a charger each day). It’s all about your intent and how often you want to charge your vape pen or not charge it.

Functionality

Another critical factor to consider is the functionality or ease of use. There are super simple vape pens: put in material, close pen, press button and go.
However, there are also devices with features like programmable presets and temperature control or devices that can burn all vapor liquids instead of legal concentrates or e-liquids. The more features a vape pen has, the lower is the ease of use but the higher the price. Consider what features you want, how happy you are with additional features and what price you are aiming for.

Design

Similar to functionality, design is also something that requires special attention when buying a new vape pen. Look for carbon fiber or stainless steel materials if you don’t mind the higher price or high-quality plastics with ceramic heating elements and Pyrex glass components. If you opt for a vape pen with rods and coils, choose titanium or stainless steel coils and quartz rods. Avoid materials like teflon, silicon or titanium alloys as they have a low melting point and are therefore potentially dangerous.

Budget

Most of the above factors will ultimately depend on this last element: budget. How much you’re willing to spend will largely influence what you buy and help you narrow down your list of options. A simple, slim, one-button vape pen is going to be way less expensive than a decked-out, stainless steel, multi-material vaping device. But this is a budding industry with new and emerging vape pens rolling out regularly. There are plenty of quality options for a reasonable price.
